Understanding Bandwidth Requirements

How much internet speed do you really need? Learn to calculate bandwidth requirements for your household.

Basic Activities

  • Web browsing: 1-5 Mbps per device
  • Email: 1 Mbps per device
  • Social media: 1-3 Mbps per device
  • Music streaming: 2 Mbps per device

Video Streaming

  • SD quality (480p): 3 Mbps per stream
  • HD quality (720p): 5 Mbps per stream
  • Full HD (1080p): 10 Mbps per stream
  • 4K/Ultra HD: 25 Mbps per stream

Video Conferencing

  • One-on-one call: 1-4 Mbps
  • Group call (HD): 4-6 Mbps
  • Professional video call: 6-10 Mbps

Gaming

  • Online gaming: 3-6 Mbps (low latency more important than speed)
  • Game downloads: 25+ Mbps recommended
  • Game streaming (Stadia, GeForce Now): 15-35 Mbps

Calculating Your Needs

To calculate your household's bandwidth needs:

  1. List all devices that connect to the internet
  2. Identify typical simultaneous activities
  3. Add up the bandwidth for concurrent activities
  4. Add 25% buffer for overhead and future needs

Example Calculation

Family of 4 with typical usage:

  • 2 people streaming HD video: 10 Mbps × 2 = 20 Mbps
  • 1 person gaming: 5 Mbps
  • 1 person video calling: 4 Mbps
  • Background devices (phones, smart home): 5 Mbps
  • Total: 34 Mbps
  • With 25% buffer: ~43 Mbps
  • Recommended plan: 50-100 Mbps

Upload Speed Considerations

Don't forget about upload speeds if you:

  • Work from home with video calls
  • Upload content to social media or YouTube
  • Use cloud backup services
  • Live stream gaming or content

For these activities, look for plans with at least 10-20 Mbps upload speed, or consider fiber for symmetrical speeds.
